Looking after your sexual health whilst travelling
Travel is exciting, but it’s best to be prepared – especially when it comes to your sexual health:
Before you go:
- PrEP – If you’re travelling to an area of high HIV prevalence – such as SE Asia, some parts of South America or Africa – and if you are HIV negative, PrEP is a highly effective medication that helps prevent HIV acquisition – speak to your local sexual health clinic for more info
- Condoms – Condoms prevent STIs and unwanted pregnancies and if you’re under 25, there are free condom schemes available
- Contraception – make sure you have enough of an effective method that works for you to cover the whole of your trip
Whilst travelling:
- Use condoms with any new sexual partner- they prevent STIs and unwanted pregnancies
- If you’ve had unprotected (condom-less) sex with someone who is HIV positive and not taking treatment or of unknown HIV status – seek emergency PEP within 72 hours
- If you’re condom splits or you’ve forgotten to take your contraception pill – check with local pharmacies for emergency contraception options
On your return:
- If you’ve had unprotected sex (condom-less) with new partners, it’s best to get tested for infections. STI tests are available at sexual health clinics, pharmacies and available to order online
