Pre IUD (coil) fit information

IUDs, also more commonly known as coils, are referred to as a ‘long-acting reversible method of contraception’  –  basically, contraception you don’t have to think about.

There are two main types of IUDs (coils):

Hormonal – It has to be put into your womb (uterus) by a specially trained doctor or nurse and can last up to 8 years. It works by:

  • thinning the lining of your womb, so a fertilised egg can’t grow.
  • thickening the mucus in your cervix, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg.

Copper – It’s put into your womb (uterus) by a specially trained doctor or nurse, and prevents pregnancy by:

  • slowly releasing copper which is toxic to sperm
  • stopping fertilised eggs embedding in the womb

You will be advised on the best IUD for your needs and both types of IUDs will need to be fitted by a trained specialist.

Before your IUD (coil) fitting it’s important to use reliable contraception for three weeks before your appointment.

You can find out more about alternative contraception methods in our contraception section.

If you have having your IUD changed, it is recommended to use condoms or avoid sex for 7 days before your appointment.

If you are having your IUD fitted at a sexual health clinic, then you may be required to sign a consent form.
