Protection against syphilis and chlamydia

posted by: Susan Mills

DoxyPEP – what you need to know

There is an antibiotic now available called Doxy-PEP which, when taken after unprotected sex (condomless), can help prevent against both syphilis and chlamydia.

DoxyPEP does not reduce the risk of acquiring other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as gonorrhoea, warts or Hepatitis B or C, but it can protect against syphilis and chlamydia.

The treatment is not 100% effective, so to ensure safe sex it is always best to wear a condom. DoxyPEP can be used after you have had sex without a condom to help prevent against infections.

Not everyone needs to take DoxyPEP, and our sexual health clinics can advise and help you decide if it’s right for you. You do not need to be referred from your GP.

We would also recommend regular three monthly STI testing when taking Doxy PEP.’
