Looking after your sexual health when travelling

Travel is exciting, but it’s best to be prepared – especially when it comes to your sexual health:

Before you go:

  • PrEP – If you’re travelling to an area of high HIV prevalence – such as SE Asia, some parts of South America or Africa – and if you are HIV negative, PrEP is a highly effective medication that helps prevent HIV acquisition – speak to your local sexual health clinic for more info
  • Condoms – Condoms prevent STIs and unwanted pregnancies and if you’re under 25, there are free condom schemes available
  • Contraception – make sure you have enough of an effective method that works for you to cover the whole of your trip

Whilst travelling:

  • Use condoms with any new sexual partner- they prevent STIs and unwanted pregnancies
  • If you’ve had unprotected (condom-less) sex with someone who is HIV positive and not taking treatment or of unknown HIV status – seek emergency PEP within 72 hours
  • If you’re condom splits or you’ve forgotten to take your contraception pill – check with local pharmacies for emergency contraception options

On your return:

  • If you’ve had unprotected sex (condom-less) with new partners, it’s best to get tested for infections. STI tests are available at sexual health clinics, pharmacies and available to order online

More information on all the above can be found at Devon Sexual Health.
