World Aids Day – Free HIV testing in clinics

posted by: Susan Mills

World Aids Day is a global movement to unite people in the fight against HIV and AIDS and unite communities to show strength and solidarity against HIV stigma.
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. This is a virus that attacks your body’s immune system. If left untreated, infection with HIV can pass through a series of stages leading to late-stage HIV or AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).

There is no cure for HIV, but the right treatment can ensure you live a long and healthy life. Early diagnosis and effective treatment mean that most people with HIV will not develop AIDS or AIDS related illnesses.

The only way to know your HIV status is to get tested.

HIV testing is free in sexual health clinics, and on Monday 1 December, drop-in testing will be available in our main clinics in Exeter, Barnstaple and Torquay – no appointment needed.

You can protect yourself against developing HIV through the use of condoms and medications PrEP and PEP.

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication that is used by those who are HIV negative. It is taken before sex to prevent HIV and can be 99% effective when taken correctly.

PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication that is taken after sexual contact with someone who is HIV positive to help reduce the risk of developing HIV. PEP can only be taken within 72 hours of sexual activity to be effective and should only be used in emergency situations.

More information about AIDS and HIV can be found on our Devon Sexual Health website or call our clinics on 0300 303 3989.
